ISTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF MARITIME (ITU-FMS) The ITU Faculty of Maritime (ITU-FMS) is the youngest of ITU’s 11 faculties (established in 1992) and continues the tradition of the Higher Maritime School founded in 1884. Located in Tuzla on a 70,000 m² campus area with 400 meters of coastline along the Sea of Marmara, the faculty carries out its education at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels across 52 independent buildings. Graduates of the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering / Department of Marine Engineering Management complete a 1-year English Preparatory Program followed by a 4-year undergraduate education, and receive their Bachelor’s degrees in Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering / Marine Engineering Management. After graduation, students take exams at the Turkish Seafarers Examination Center (GASM) to obtain Ocean-Going Deck Officer / Engineer Officer licenses and subsequently qualify as Ocean-Going Captains / Chief Engineers, enabling them to work in international and national fleets. Some graduates also pursue careers as managers in private maritime companies. The education follows traditional Turkish maritime training practices with a structured hierarchy, including uniformed and co-educational instruction. The faculty provides practical training through vessels such as R/V Sismik 1, the Hopa tugboat, and the Martı motor boat, along with numerous smaller training crafts. The ITU Maritime Simulator Center is one of the world’s leading maritime training and research centers. ITU-FMS was a founding president of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU/IAMUS), which includes maritime universities and students from 48 countries across 5 continents. The faculty admits approximately 100 students for Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering and 50 students for Marine Engineering Management each year. It has an academic staff of 74 members. Students also engage in sports activities at the faculty’s indoor swimming pool and gym, and participate in rowing and sailing clubs. It moved to its current 56,000 m² Fort Schuyler campus in 1934. The college joined the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1948 and was among the first U.S. maritime institutions to admit female students in 1972. Located on the Throggs Neck Peninsula where the East River meets Long Island Sound, the campus is only a few miles from Manhattan. Practical sea training is conducted aboard the training ship *Empire State VI* (173 meters, 17,000 tons), where students spend two months each summer for four years sailing around the world. The Simulation Center, which includes bridge, navigation, satellite communication, and cargo handling simulators, plays a central role in modern maritime education. Students complete a residential and uniformed program and graduate with both a Bachelor of Science (BS/BE) degree and eligibility to take U.S. Coast Guard examinations, obtaining professional maritime licenses such as Ocean-Going Officer (Captain/Chief Engineer). More information is available at [SUNY Maritime College](https://www.sunymaritime.edu?utm_source=chatgpt.com). --- MARITIME TRANSPORTATION AND MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING PROGRAM The joint international dual-degree undergraduate program between ITU Faculty of Maritime and SUNY Maritime College awards graduates both an ITU Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering degree and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from SUNY Maritime College. Graduates are eligible to take Ocean-Going Captain license examinations at the Turkish Seafarers Examination Center (GASM). Those who pass the exams administered by the Turkish Maritime Authority are granted the “Ocean-Going Deck Officer” certificate, allowing them to serve as Second Officers on commercial vessels. With experience, officers may progress to First Officer and eventually to Ocean-Going Captain. Graduates may also work in maritime companies in positions such as general manager, operations manager, technical manager, deck inspector, and personnel inspector. They may also serve as pilot captains in the Bosphorus region and Turkish ports after gaining sufficient sea experience. Applicants must rank within the top 90,000 in the quantitative score category according to ÖSYM guidelines. Detailed information can be found in the ÖSYM Preference Guide. --- PROGRAM STRUCTURE The ITU–SUNY Maritime dual-degree program is a 4-year international undergraduate program. * Students who fail the TOEFL requirement must complete a mandatory 1-year English Preparatory Program at ITU School of Foreign Languages.
