Welcome ITU Student!
After a challenging exam and preference process, you are now an ITU student and ready to experience the privileged education of the Double Degree Programs. Being aware that a new chapter has started in your life, this handbook prepared to support you, our Double Degree students, will hopefully help you at the beginning of your university journey. We wish you all a successful academic life and warmly welcome you to ITU.
How to register for Double Degree Programs? What is required for registration?
First, we recommend that you review the registration procedures on the Student Affairs Office website:
https://www.sis.itu.edu.tr/YeniKayit202610/kayitlar.php?secenek=1
You can find all required documents, conditions, and detailed information through this link.
Registration for Double Degree Programs will take place between 01–05 September 2025 via the link above. Registration cannot be completed via e-Government (e-Devlet).
Registration Steps
- Click the link above and learn your student number by selecting the “student number” section.
- Go to any VakıfBank branch and pay the first semester preparatory school fee of 28,600 TL using your student number. Do not transfer money to any IBAN or account number. (Students enrolled in programs with the International University of Sarajevo do not make payments to ITU.)
- Return to the same page, click the “Registration Process” section, and log in using your Turkish ID number and date of birth.
- Upload your high school diploma and payment receipt in PDF format and complete your registration. (Students in Maritime programs must also upload a Seafarer Medical Certificate. Students in Sarajevo programs should only upload their diploma and do not make any payment.)
Original documents and 4 passport-sized photos (4.5 cm x 6 cm, recent) must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office between 13–24 October 2025. Further details will be announced on the official website before submission dates.
IMPORTANT: Students in International University of Sarajevo programs must complete ITU registration.
What are the tuition fees? Where and how are they paid? Is installment available?
Tuition fees are paid at any VakıfBank branch. You can pay using your 9-digit student number obtained from the ITU Student Affairs website.
Payments are made in two equal installments at the beginning of each semester. The fees shown on program pages cover only tuition and do not include living expenses such as accommodation, food, or materials. Tuition fees may change annually. Students are advised to check updated fees before their study year abroad.
Payments for ITU-based semesters are made via VakıfBank branches or ATMs using the student number. Do not transfer money to any IBAN.
What is the English language requirement? What happens if I cannot meet it?
The language of instruction in Double Degree Programs is 100% English. Since part of your studies will take place abroad, students must meet international standards (TOEFL or accepted PTE scores).
Some programs may have specific language requirements. Detailed information is available here:
https://www.sis.itu.edu.tr/EN/regulations/valid-english-tests-and-minimum-scores.php
According to the Senate decision dated 06.07.2023, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic scores must be obtained from official state university test centers.
Students who cannot meet the English requirement are placed into A–B–C–D level preparatory classes based on a placement test and receive one year of academic English training. Institutional TOEFL exams are held three times a year (start, end of first semester, and end of second semester).
Students who meet the requirement at the beginning of the first semester may start their undergraduate courses without completing the preparatory year. Students may take a maximum of two courses in the second semester if they meet conditions early.
Students have a maximum of two years in the preparatory program. If they still do not meet the requirement, they may transfer to another university or their enrollment may be terminated.
Irregular student status: conditions, advantages and disadvantages
Students who meet the language requirement mid-year may start undergraduate courses in the spring semester as irregular students. They must send their English score to the Foreign Languages Coordinator (ozgebozkurt@itu.edu.tr) for approval.
Irregular students may take up to two first-year spring courses. While this helps adaptation and reduces future workload, irregular status students complete their studies in 9 semesters and are not eligible for graduation ranking, although this does not affect scholarships, graduation, or postgraduate opportunities.
Conditions to go to the USA in Double Degree Programs
Students must:
- Meet English proficiency requirements
- Successfully complete first-year courses at ITU
- Maintain the required GPA (varies by program)
If these conditions are met, students are eligible to continue their education at partner universities in the USA.
| PROGRAM | REQUIRED MIN GPA |
| Information Systems Engineering | 2.00/4.00 |
| Bioengineering | 2.00/4.00 |
| Maritime Transportation and Management Eng. | - |
| Industrial Engineering | 2.00/4.00 |
| Marine Engineering | - |
| Civil Engineering | 2.00/4.00 |
| Management | 2.00/4.00 |
| Fashion Design | 3.00/4.00 |
| Textile Development and Marketing | 2.50/4.00 |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 2.50/4.00 |
-
In Maritime Transportation Management Engineering and Marine Engineering Management programs, students are sent to the United States in the spring semester. Therefore, no GPA requirement is applied for these students.
-
-
In programs jointly conducted with the International University of Sarajevo, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00 after completing their studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to continue their education at ITU.
-
If students are unable to pass compulsory courses at ITU or their GPA falls below the required threshold, they may take additional courses; however, they continue their studies at ITU as irregular students in order to meet the requirements for going to the USA.
What are the procedures for going to the USA?
Students who meet the required conditions for going to the USA are reported to the partner university by program coordinators. The partner universities then send an I-20 form, which is required for obtaining a student visa.
Students must apply for the visa individually at the consulate with this document and other required materials.
Detailed information about the visa process can be accessed here:
Airfare for travel to and from the USA is also the responsibility of the student. However, students are strongly advised to consult their program coordinators regarding orientation dates and plan their flights accordingly to arrive before orientation begins.
Before going to the USA, students must complete and have signed the required health forms and submit them to the partner university. These forms are available on the universities’ official websites.
Will I receive information about life in the USA before going?
Yes. Before departure, students receive information from ITU program coordinators and also from coordinators at the partner university during orientation sessions. In addition, students who have previously studied in the USA or completed graduate studies there often voluntarily assist new students.
Accommodation conditions at ITU and partner campuses
For accommodation at ITU, students should contact the Dormitory and Scholarship Office after completing registration:
http://yurtburs.itu.edu.tr
Since partner universities are campus-based institutions, students can stay in on-campus dormitories. It is recommended that students live in campus housing during their study abroad period to better adapt to both the university and the country.
In the USA, students may choose to stay with either Turkish or international roommates. However, it is generally recommended to live with international students to improve English proficiency.
Internship and summer school conditions in the USA programs
Students who fail a course in the USA may retake it during summer school by paying 3–4 times the normal credit fee per course.
Students may complete internships both in the USA and in Türkiye, except for programs where internships are mandatory. Students must inform their faculty internship committees in advance and are responsible for finding their own internship placements. They may consult program coordinators for guidance.
Can I stay in the USA after graduation? Can I pursue a master’s or work?
Graduates may pursue master’s degrees at reputable universities and find job opportunities at major companies.
Under a law implemented since 2008, graduates of engineering programs jointly conducted with US universities may stay and work in the USA for up to 2.5 years under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, provided they find a job within the required timeframe. For other programs, this period is 1 year.
Graduates may also pursue master’s degrees in the United States.
If I fail a few courses at ITU, can I retake them in the USA? Do I have to pay full tuition again?
Courses failed at ITU or the partner university can be retaken under certain conditions:
Courses failed at ITU (maximum two courses):
-
Can be taken in ITU summer school if offered
-
If not offered, may be taken at another accredited university with approval
-
May be taken at the partner university if equivalent and approved
Courses failed at the partner university (maximum two courses):
-
May be retaken in the partner university summer school
-
May be taken at ITU summer school if approved
-
May be taken at another university with approval
-
May be retaken at ITU if equivalent
If only two courses remain, students may apply to ITU Student Affairs and pay only the credit fee for those courses. If more than two courses are failed, full semester tuition must be paid.
